Why we recommend timber and PVC shutters over MDF and ‘Craftwood’

At Joseph Michael Shutters & Blinds, we recommend looking beyond MDF when choosing made-to-measure shutters. For many windows, its weight and specification limits mean compromises in panel size, opening arrangements or finish. A different material can be a better starting point for the design you actually want.

We offer paulownia, basswood, pine and PVC shutters. That gives us different options to discuss for your windows and rooms, rather than trying to make one material suit every opening.

Craftwood is not a type of solid timber

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard: an engineered wood-based material, rather than solid timber. Some shutter ranges sold as Craftwood or engineered wood composite use combinations of fibreboard with an outer coating. Calling a range Craftwood does not turn it into a solid hardwood shutter.

Ask what the louvres, panel stiles, rails and fixing frames are made from. A range name is not a full specification, and different suppliers can use different constructions. We want you to know what is inside the shutter before you commit.

Why MDF can be a poor choice for larger windows

MDF shutter panels are often heavier than lightweight paulownia alternatives. That matters when you want larger panels or several panels to fold away together. The product’s permitted widths, hinge arrangements and support requirements can restrict the layout.

On a wide window, those restrictions may mean more panel divisions or additional support posts than you had envisaged. If your priority is an open view when the shutters are folded back, check the proposed configuration carefully before accepting an MDF quotation.

As a specific example, Plantation Shutters Ltd’s published Craftwood MDF specification says the range is unsuitable for larger unsupported installations and limits the number of panels hinged together to two, or one at a doorway.

It also lists no special shapes or custom colours. Those are limits for that particular range, but they show why the specification matters more than the sales description.

Bays, doors and unusual shapes need more flexibility

A bay window needs a design that works around its angles, handles and available folding space. Wider glazing, door openings and shaped windows deserve particular attention: an MDF range may not permit the arrangement or shape you want.

We would rather select a suitable material for your intended layout than ask you to compromise the layout to accommodate MDF. A survey establishes what is possible; timber and PVC ranges also have their own size and construction limits.

A coated surface does not make MDF waterproof

Do not assume an MDF shutter is suitable for a damp window simply because it has a protective coating. Moisture reaching an exposed fibreboard core can cause swelling. Persistent condensation, damaged edges and direct splashes are reasons to look carefully at the material choice.

For bathrooms and other moisture-prone areas, ask us about an appropriate PVC shutter specification. Ordinary timber is not automatically suitable for wet conditions either. We assess the room, ventilation and likely water exposure before recommending a product.

Our alternatives: paulownia, basswood, pine and PVC

Paulownia: a lightweight hardwood option worth considering where panel weight and everyday operation matter, including larger windows and bays. The final panel layout still needs to follow the chosen range’s specification.

Basswood: another real hardwood option, offering a timber finish for customers who want an alternative to fibreboard. We can discuss the available finishes and show you samples.

Pine: a real softwood option in our range. Pine is not a hardwood, and we will explain the particular product’s construction and finish so you can compare it properly.

PVC: an alternative to wood-based materials, with suitable ranges available for moisture-prone rooms. PVC is not automatically lighter or suitable for unlimited panel sizes; the exact product specification is important.

Compare the result, not just the headline price

An MDF quotation is not a saving if it leaves you with a panel arrangement, restricted finish or room suitability you are unhappy with. Compare the complete fitted specification: material, frame, panel divisions, opening direction, finish, installation and written warranty.

Our advice is to explore timber and PVC alternatives before settling for MDF. Whether you prefer full-height shutters or café-style shutters, we can help you choose a material and layout suited to your home.
